A dental emergency is any situation involving severe tooth pain, significant bleeding, swelling, a knocked-out tooth, a cracked or broken tooth, or signs of infection such as a dental abscess. Essentially, if you're experiencing intense pain, trauma to the mouth, or symptoms that are worsening, it's a dental emergency and you should contact us right away.
Yes — a severe toothache can signal a serious underlying problem such as a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, or a dental abscess. These conditions won't resolve on their own and can worsen quickly if left untreated. Rinse your mouth with warm water and call our office immediately so we can evaluate and relieve your pain as soon as possible.
Act fast — time is critical! Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root. Gently rinse it with water if it's dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If that's not possible, keep it moist in a glass of milk or between your cheek and gum. Call us immediately and try to be seen within an hour for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Yes. A broken or cracked tooth can expose the sensitive inner layers of the tooth to bacteria, leading to infection or nerve damage. Even if there's no pain at first, you should call us right away. Rinse your mouth with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce any swelling, and save any broken pieces to bring with you to your appointment.
A dental infection or abscess is always an emergency. Warning signs include a persistent throbbing toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, fever, facial swelling, or a pimple-like bump on your gums. Left untreated, infections can spread to the jaw, neck, or other parts of the body. Do not wait — call our office or visit an emergency room if swelling is severe.
