Dental Crown In Miami Beach, FL

Crown

A dental crown is a way to repair a damaged tooth by placing a cap over it. It may be recommended if you have a tooth with a cavity too large to fill, your tooth is cracked, broken, weakened, or has been severely worn down. This allows you to keep the tooth without risking further damage when you use it to eat. Getting a dental crown not only restores your smile, but will help keep your teeth healthy.

If you don’t get a crown when recommended, the tooth could become more badly damaged, it could become infected, and it could affect nearby teeth, leading to more serious dental health problems.

Types of crowns

There are a wide range of materials used for dental crowns. The most common are metal and porcelain, but they can also be made from a composite resin, ceramic, or a combination of multiple materials. The type of crown for you will likely depend on the tooth being repaired as well as other factors. When you meet with the Mount Zion Dental team in Miami, we will make a recommendation after examination.

Dental crown procedure

The dental crown procedure typically takes place in three stages. First, the tooth will be prepared for the crown by filing it down and removing part of the enamel. Once this is done, impressions will be made so the crown can be created. You will be given a temporary crown to protect the tooth until the permanent crown can be placed. Once your customized crown is ready, we will place the crown on the remaining tooth, cementing it in place.

Things to consider

If we recommend a dental crown, it’s because we believe your tooth can be saved, but needs extra support to stay stable and healthy. However, there are some things to consider if you need a dental crown:

  • It is possible that the crown can become chipped or knocked loose. It may even be knocked out in some cases. If that happens, you will need to get another dental crown to replace it.
  • The lifespan of a dental crown is between five and fifteen years, depending on how you care for your teeth.
  • Not all crowns cover the entire tooth. You may be able to get an inlay or 3/4 crown instead.

A dental crown is a good option when you have a damaged tooth that can be saved, but needs extra support and stability. By covering the tooth with the crown, you can use your tooth as you normally would without risking further damage or complication.

At Mount Zion Dental in Miami, FL, we will work closely with you to protect your teeth, including with dental crowns. If you need a dental crown (or think you might), contact us at (786) 565-5913 to make an appointment.
